They is a gender neutral pronoun which exists alongside 'he' and 'she'. It is this pronoun that 14-year-old J has adopted. In questioning their gender identity, J takes hormone blockers to delay puberty. But after two years of medical treatment, J has no more choice and must decide on a future identity according to established norms. Their sister and Araz, an Iranian companion, take J to a party organised by the latter's family. This family, which also crosses boundaries, offers J an unexpected digression.
