Sebastiane is a young soldier in a Roman army filled with men who are often naked and engage in homosexual acts. The centurion, Severus, tries to seduce Sebastiane, who rejects him. A reinterpretation of the life of Saint Sebastian, the film is a peplum with unapologetically homoerotic themes, whose visual beauty and power are striking. Transcending the issue of gender and linking rebellion with homosexuality, Derek Jarman already addresses sexuality here in its most political dimension.
