21-year old artist Gena was born and raised on the harsh streets of Magadan, an icy outpost of the Soviet gulag. She dresses in luridly colourful costumes made from junk and tape, and protests against the government in the streets of Moscow. Gena draws inspiration from Leigh Bowery for her radical performances, which she stages at the risk of her own life. Using her art as a form of activism, Gena aims to change people’s perception of beauty and raise awareness of the oppression and harrassment experienced by the LGBTQ+ community. This documentary captures Gena's everyday struggles by blending striking scenes from her performances to intimate conversations on her life as a non-binary artist in Russia.
