In order to investigate better a series of homosexual murders in Greenwich Village, a young cop (Al Pacino) poses as a leather-clad, mustachioed gay man. The film was very poorly received by the gay community at the time, and yet Friedkin does not denigrate homosexuality, or even sadomasochism. He even seems fascinated by a good old-fashioned fist-fucking in the depths of New York's darkrooms...
