L'air de la mer rend libre

The film's title is beautiful, as are the bride and groom - yet their faces look more like they're heading to a funeral. Put under pressure by his family, Saïd, a butcher's son, an Arab and a closeted homosexual, has agreed to marry Hadjira, a repentant sinner who turned to religion after a scandalous romance with a drug dealer. Although not soul mates, the characters will be friends. From the young groom's nocturnal elopements to meet a new Grindr date every night, to the emotional isolation of his wife, who dreads getting pregnant, the film captures their shuddering shame and loneliness, hidden beneath the smiling surface of appearances. In this new feature, Nadir Moknèche (Lola Pater) paints an intimate portrait of immigrant children torn between their desires and tradition. (Based on Sandra Onana's review in Libération).
